Venue

The venue of the add-in program will be the Central Library and Library of Rare Books of Istanbul University and some other Istanbul libraries.

Istanbul University was founded in 1453 by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II. It became an institution of higher education named the Darülfünûn (House of Multiple Sciences) on 23 July 1846. On 1 August 1933, İstanbul Darülfünûnu was reorganized as Istanbul University following the educational reforms of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Classes officially began on 1 November 1933.

The university has seventeen faculties on five campuses; the main campus being on Beyazıt Square. The university has a teaching staff of 2,000 professors and associates and 4,000 assistants and younger staff. More than 60,000 undergraduate and 8,000 postgraduate students follow the courses offered by Istanbul University every year. The main gate was depicted on the reverse of the Turkish 500 lira banknotes of 1971–1984.

Library and Documentation Department of Rare Books Library represents the outstanding examples of the cultural life of Turkish society. This library was built in 1912.  One of the interesting fact is that Mustafa Kemal Ataturk used this library by himself. And you can see the books which were borrowed by Ataturk from the library in the special room. The library collection was enriched by the contributions and acquisitions, for example from Yıldız Palace Library, Mullah Sahip and others.

Istanbul University Central Library is not only a rich university library, but also a national library receiving a legal copy of each and every new book published in the country. İstanbul University Central Library is the oldest as of its date and the biggest, but at the same time it's modern and advanced in services. 36  Faculty Libraries and Institute Libraries are grouped under the umbrella of the Central Library. The Rare Works Library has the oldest collection of the Central Library, around 65.000 volumes, consists of Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Latin and other languages press and writing books, magazines, newspapers, photo albums, maps and notes. The Library also has the  Information Center for Disabled People with appropriate equipment and services. Preservation and digitization activities are within the Library's priorities. The IU Central Library is carrying out various projects with the aim of presenting private collections each of which is a treasure and common heritage of mankind, providing their publicity and visibility.

Istanbul University Library provides services at two different building: Rare Works Library and Central Library. Within the 6-storey building of the Central Library users receive variety of services of the international standards level. Above that, there are 36 brunch libraries connected to the central library.
