BIBLIOTEKET (THE LIBRARY)

Rentemestervej 76

Facts about the house

History

The original industrial buildings on the plot were constructed around 1900. These buildings eachconsisted of two and a half storeys containing production and administration, one now demolishedresidence for the managing director (facing Rentemestervej) as well as a number of smallwarehouses. Back then the buildings housed a ropewalk.

Sometime during the 1920’s the buildings housed Schous Soap Factories (Schous Sæbefabrikker). The actual production of soap took place a bit further down Rentemestervej (at the premises whereISS is located today).

The industrial complex at Dortheavej 61/Rentemestervej 76 contained various by-products(including textiles etc.) as well as the administrative head office for Schous Soap Factories.

During the 1940’s the main building was enlarged with one level corresponding to the present threeand a half storeys. In the 1960’s the buildings of reinforced concrete, a four-storeys building facingRentemestervej and the adjoining building at Dortheavej 63, respectively, were added to thecomplex.

In the 1970’s Schous Soap Factories moved from the plot and the building was divided into smallerleases and let to various small business enterprises, among these printing houses.

By the end of 1995 most of the plot was bought by Copenhagen municipality (KøbenhavnsKommune) and divided into two title numbers, Dortheavej 63/Rentemestervej 76 and Dortheavej61/Rentemestervej 76, respectively. The latter was bought with the intension of converting theindustrial buildings into “District Centre Northwest” (Kvartercentret Nordvest). This was to be thepivotal point of the future “neighbourhood upgrading” project for this part of town called“Neighbourhood upgrading” (Kvarterløft Femkanten).

The 1st of October 1997 was the opening day for the renovated and freshly built District Centre. Itsfunction was to be the pivotal point of the local district boost project as well as community centrefor the entire district Bispebjerg – Nordvest.

By the end of 2003 the district boost project was ended and the premises were given the status of anordinary community centre under the Department of Culture and Leisure (Kultur- og Fritids-forvaltningen) in Copenhagen municipality. In connection to this, it would change its name into“Kulturhuset Bispebjerg Nordvest”.

In 2006 the Copenhagen libraries and Kulturhuset prepared a sketch plan concerning proposals of afusion between the district libraries and Kulturhuset at the same plot. The proposal was part of therequests for the negotiations to budget 2007. At the time it failed to attain political support and wasreduced to the desk drawer.

In the spring of 2008 very hectic negotiations took place in Copenhagen regarding the whereaboutsof a new Ungdomshuset (a facility providing various cultural offers to the youth of Copenhagen;owned by the municipal administration, but run by a group of young volunteers). A majority at theCity Council wanted to establish a new Ungdomshuset as a replacement for the Ungdomshuset atJagtvej which had been demolished. Various buildings around Copenhagen were mentionedfollowed by massive protests from the inhabitants of the respective areas.

A political agreement was reached in April 2008 by the name “Slightly more Northwest” (Lidt mereNordvest). This meant the new Ungdomshuset was to move into one half of Kulturhuset BispebjergNordvest (the part facing Dortheavej) and in return a brand new building would be built on the areafacing the remains of the old community centre. This building was, along with the remains of theold community centre, to accommodate a combined library and community centre (as wished in 2006).

The new Ungdomshuset moved into a part of their premises, called the annexe, on the 1st of July2008 while the main building was partitioned physically. On the 1st of January 2009 Ungdomshusettook over their remaining part of the community centre including the big hall. The communitycentre was put on a hold and prepared for the relocation to temporary premises while reconstructionand construction of a new building were to take place on the site.

In January 2009 a panel of judges decided that COBE, in co-operation with TRANSFORM and thefirm of contractors Brd. Andersen, should be in charge of the new construction.

The community centre finally moved to their temporary premises (Tomsgårdsvej 35) on the 1st of October 2009.

Demolishing commenced in November 2009 and the entire 2010 was set aside for construction.

The new buildings were delivered at the beginning of January 2011.

On the 1st of April the first stage of the new “BIBLIOTEKET” opened.

On the 6th of May the entire house opened.

BIBLIOTEKET contains: community centre, library, concert hall, café, creative workshops, citizenservice quick, local committee, community centre, conference rooms and local TV/radio.
